The Elephant In The Room
December 31, 2004

I received an e-mail today critical of the fact that I could "whine about a stupid and ridiculous catering" when people across the globe are coming to terms of the devastation wreaked by the Tsunami.

(Oh how would I ever be a good person were it not for the e-mail moral police...)

As you may know, it's not too often I speak of world events here. Nor do I have any intention of starting. This is a blog about my life as a caterer. I am not a news journalist.

There are enough sites out there dedicated to news and matters of the world. I like to think of my little corner of the web as an escape of sorts. It is for me, anyway.

But please make no mistake that I am aware of what is happening. My heart could not be more burdened for those effected by this monumental tragedy. The devastation, the suffering, and the ongoing sorrow felt by this will not soon be forgotten.

So to the person who e-mailed me, be assured I am aware of what is happening.

And be assured that tomorrow is another day and there will be another blog where I whine and complain "about a stupid and ridiculous catering."

In the mean time, I do strongly encourage you visit Elizabeth Soutter and Motherhood Is Not for Whimps for excellent pieces concerning the current state of the world.

Sigh. You know what? For all of us, it is a RELIEF to come here and read your stories. There are tons of websites out there doing a great job of keeping us up to date about the disaster, where we can donate, etc. I don't think you should feel obliged to fling in world commentary "just because." This is your blog, you make the rules. (Like I have to tell you that??)

I hope you told that "bossy heifer" who emailed you to bugger off. And I was just appalled by those clients' manners. Ain't it great what booze and stress can do?

I agree w/ Dr Alice. Yours is a welcome respite from the sadness & heartache (and sometimes anger) that the news of late reports.

I'm not one for "heavy blogging" anyways.

Do you have a spare virus you could email? lol

What kind of an idiot comes to your site assuming you'd be talking about the tsunami anyway?

I think we all know where to go if we want heavy news and where to go if we want a dose of normalacy....if you could be considered normal!

Off to see what ES has to say about the world...

Thank you all.

And Veg - if you consider me normal - it might be time for you to get a little help. ;-)

My friend sent me your blog.... you have had me laughing so hard.. I was crying! I've shared your blog with all the other food whores I know... but I must say you are the ultimate and the ONLY REAL Food Whore!

You rock. (But you probably already knew that!)

I suppose your emailer is off checking a couple of million other websites and telling them what to post about.

Some people have NFI.

They also proved the rule that you so often, hilariously, point out - people are stupid.

Happy new year! Looking forward to many more fractured function stories (although I guess you're not, you have to live through them!).

Ahah! I was wondering why all the traffic from the Food Whore this week!

You sweet thing sending people my way. I should send more people your way: for I truly appreciate the beauty and wisdom of great food and laughs in the face of horrible tragedy.

Keep up the great work, the world needs 'ya.
