The Quirky Stuff
January 25, 2005

When sitting down with Clients to discuss food for Tricks, we do have set menus as examples for them to see. But we're wide open as far as what we will make for people.

If you want flaming skewers of swordfish brought to each table, we can do that. Or if you want egg salad tea sandwiches topped with sweet relish - we're all over it. Short of asking me to perform some sort of cumbersome acrobatic act while serving your food, we do whatever we can to make it happen. (I am no acrobat - unlike The Friend in Texas who's been known to do Nadia Comenici type stunts such as the splits in public places.)

Name the menu and we will do everything within our power to make it happen for you.

So we sat down last week with a Client for an upcoming trick we have in May. She was hedgy when talking about her menu and when pressed by us to be more open about her wants, she admitted she was hesitant because she wants some things outside the norm. Her family is very ecclectic and they don't view formal events such as weddings to be something that has to be stuffy and follow the books of etiquette.

They are including all of the children as much as possible so they want to make it fun for them to participate. So she wants peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches cut into funky shapes. And the adults want ketchup to dip their chicken in. It's an odd menu - by most standards, I guess - but these people are all about quirky fun and want their wedding reception to reflect that.

And we will oblige.

As we were talking about some of the foods her family likes, The Partner and I got to sharing our own funky tastes when it comes to food.

For instance, I love nothing more than a sandwhich made of peanut butter and dill pickles. (Mock me - but you haven't lived until you've tried it.)

And I like a good bowl of spicy chili topped with a drizzle of real maple syrup.

I enjoy an egg salad sandwhich topped with crispy potato chips.

And there's nothing as lovely as a piece of whole-grain toast topped with The Mother's fresh raspberry jam and crispy maple bacon.

So what funky foods do you like?

I love fried eggs served over a tossed green salad, dressed with simple vinaigrette. The fried eggs are better if cooked in duck fat. Speaking of duck fat, I also enjoy a generous smear of room temperature duck fat on a slice of good country bread. I liked your jam and bacon suggestion. Bacon tastes great with everything!

Fish finger sandwiches
Cheddar, potato chip & marmite sandwiches
Angel delight and jelly
or jelly with tinned cream
(I havent eaten any of these in years, mind you, but I'd like to enjoy them again some time)

I personally adore peanut butter and seaweed sandwiches. Dried squid and peanut butter is quite good as well.

My son loves peanut butter and munster cheese in an onion pita. I like salt and vinegar chips in my tuna fish sandwich, oh and with the bread ever so lightly toasted (basically warmed.)

fried spam & egg on toast
fried spam on toast with jelly

Posted by: Valerie at January 26, 2005 08:16 AM

I'll eat anything rolled up in a hot tortilla. Leftover chow mein. Those soy chick'n patties. You name it.

Posted by: Kate at January 26, 2005 08:23 AM

A piece of bread thinly coated with butter then slathered with HP sauce.
Ham and potato chip sandwiches.
Pepperoni and pineapple pizza.
Cheddar cheese with Branston Pickle.

Posted by: Lemon at January 26, 2005 08:46 AM

Plain yogurt and maple syrup on waffles or pancakes. A lot of people seem to get really weirded out by this combination, and I'm not sure why.

Posted by: Lexica at January 26, 2005 09:53 AM

I love ketchup on my scrambled eggs.

I can eat dry ramen noodle as a snack.

Posted by: Damomma at January 26, 2005 09:54 AM

dill pickles wrapped in cream cheese and ham
mayonaise on my cheeseburgers (and NOTHING else)
dipping my french fries in my vanilla shake

Princess Trouble likes her blueberry waffles with KETCHUP. Odd child...

Posted by: HomefrontSix at January 26, 2005 11:13 AM

I like ketchup on NOTHING!!
No mayo on sandwiches for me. I'm a mustard girl.

Posted by: Valerie at January 26, 2005 11:15 AM

Butter, Lemon Juice and a sprinkle of sugar on my waffles
PB&H..Peanut Butter and Honey sandwiches, but I put the honey on the bread about 1/2 hour before and it makes the bread kind of crunchy.
When I was a kid, I mixed peanut butter and ketchup and ate it on crackers (regularly)

oh, and....i love head-cheese sandwiches.

When I was a kid I used to come home from school and mix Rice Krispies, honey, peanut butter and chocolate syrup in a big bowl til it got to be a ball the size of a dinner plate, then I would sit in our hammock and munch on it.

I think I ate this every day for about 2 years.

I always eat my macaroni and cheese with a bunch of ketchup mixed in.

Pancakes slathered with peanut butter.

My mom told me about a sandwich of miracle whip, peanut butter and lettuce her mom always made her sibling eat. Esh :S

Well, I had brussel sprouts and peanut butter yesterday and it was pretty darn tasty.

I mix honey in my peanut butter and eat it on a sandwich with sliced bananas and crispy bacon.

The older little president likes ketchup mixed into her mashed potatoes.

Peanut butter on hamburgers.
Peanut butter and bacon on toast.
And orange juice with anything chocolate, anything.

(God, I'm starting to sound like the Elvis cookbook.)

My husband likes, mashed potatoes and HP sauce. Loads and loads of HP sauce.

I like cajun seasonings on my popcorn. I don't like ketchup, mayo or mustard on my hamburger. It makes the bread soggy. I like to dip plain chips in French's salad dressing.

Once my high school boyfriend's family invited me over for dinner - hot dogs and hamburgers, potato salad, typical barbeque food. But there was peanut butter on the table in addition to everything else. Do you know they put peanut butter on their hot dogs and hamburgers - on top of ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise. Yuck!

The weirdest I get is grape jelly on my sausage biscuits and french fries in between warm, soft chocolate chips cookies!

Posted by: Echo at January 26, 2005 10:22 PM

Tuna salad with yogurt and dill instead of mayo.

Pork breakfast sausage with homemade jam on English muffins.

And the real guilty pleasure is macaroni and cheese from a box with Mrs. Dash sprinkled in.

Posted by: Kaetchen at January 27, 2005 08:29 AM

I like to take alternating bites of chocolate and potato chips.

After a night on the town in Seattle, we would hit the hot dog stand on the corner at 3am for a brat w/cream cheese. YUM!

Peanut Butter & Sweet Pickle sandwiches
Peanut Butter & Dill Pickle Sandwiches
Dill pickle & cream cheese, rolled in hard salami
Chips on Sandwiches (which chip depends on what type of sandwich)

Posted by: Dyane at January 27, 2005 10:16 AM

sliced, ripe pears in my grilled cheese sandwiches :)

Posted by: wilsonian at January 27, 2005 11:48 AM

For the peanut butter + fans, have you tried peanut butter and onion? Especially as a side dish to tomato soup? I think it's quite tasty, but either pb and dill pickle or pb with banana and mayo will remain my favorites.

I think it's that pb has both a salty and a sweet component, so it can mix well with other flavors.

Posted by: Sue at January 27, 2005 01:14 PM

Can't say you'll catch me trying PB and onion anytime soon.

We took the kids out to eat last night. One alternated eating his ice cream with bites of a pickle and the other took mouthfuls of mac and cheese while shoveling ice cream in. We sat across the table marveling at what horrible table manners they were using, but in total awe of the fact that they were able to combine those horrid tastes.

Posted by: veg4me at January 27, 2005 03:42 PM

You haven't lived until you've eaten Vegemite and cheese sandwiches for breakfast.

Even better toasted!

Posted by: kitchen hand at January 27, 2005 06:35 PM

I like thick slices of cold meatloaf on a lour tortilla that has been pan fried with a pat of butter until tortilla is crispy. Then I spread on a thick layer of cream cheese and to top it off, a squirt of vietnemese rooster hot sauce (it is a red bottle with a rooster on it, thus we call it rooster sauce).

Mmmmmm

Posted by: Ranta Lot at January 27, 2005 07:41 PM

Peanut butter and frozen chocolate chip sandwich - on crappy white bread.

Cream cheese with pudding powder dumped on top.

Chips in my sandwich.

Posted by: Misa at January 27, 2005 08:12 PM

I agree with PB on pancakes... with maple syrup! Cheese on pancakes is also good (toasted into the bottom of the batter, oh yeah).

Salt-and-vinegar chips dipped in drained yogurt.

Potsticker sauce, straight up.

Goat cheese wrapped in nasturtium leaves.

Paprika on buttered popcorn.

And this whole thread inspired me to make a special lunch for today... PB on whole wheat, with shredded carrots marinated in a Thai/Japanese style vinaigrette of soy sauce, plum vinegar, toasted sesame oil, garlic, red pepper flakes, and cilantro to go on top. And I can't wait for lunchtime!!!

It's nice to run into someone else who puts ketchup on their mac and cheese. My mother tells me that the first time they served it at her boarding school after she got there everyone looked at her very strangely when she asked for the ketchup. By the end of the first year, everyone else was doing it too.

I like hot quinoa mixed with tunafish, with a liberal application of balsamic vinegar.

Also peanut butter with applebutter.

Posted by: LibraryGryffon at January 28, 2005 07:32 AM

Fabulous!!!

Different strokes for different folks, for sure.

I am totally going to try some of this stuff.

But I don't think I can get Vegemite here...or can I?

Posted by: The Food Whore at January 28, 2005 05:59 PM

Gosh, I feel so NORMAL after reading all this!

My strangest combo is salsa on eggs or omlettes, and that is really not that strange....or so they say.

Valerie, you must have Hawaiian roots somewhere, because Spam is a staple over here. It's served on anything and everything. :)

When I was a kid I used to cut little dice-sized cubes of butter and eat them like sweets. Just butter. I was a cholesterol baby...

I also used to make sandwiches where one slice was spread with apricot jam, the other with Bovril (a salty beef spread) and slices of cheddar cheese between them.

I will eat Hellmann's mayo straight from the jar with a spoon when nobody's looking... Or spread it on slices of cheese to snack on.

Potato crisps dipped in chutney. Mmmmm.

That is such a mind numbing list I can't even remember the normal stuff I like.
I've heard about the peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. A character in a series of detective novels eats them, or ate them when she was a kid. I can't remember that either. Her name is Kinsey Milhone and the author is Sue Grafton. They're good reads.
