« Flip-Flop Fiasco | Main | Long Periods of Absence » What's That Saying?
May 02, 2005
Ever heard that saying, "...The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions..."? Yeah. Well, in my house, the saying goes a little something like this, "The Road To Hell is Paved With Frozen Bananas." Like any other well-intentioned cook I am the kind of person who takes an overly ripe banana and sticks it in the freezer. I do this because A) I don't like to throw food away and B) it makes me feel like I actually am the kind of person who plans ahead to bake some banana bread or some fabulous banana muffins like my friend Veg4Me But the gig is up.
The Husband walked by and said, "What's with all the frozen bananas?" "Oh that's all the banana bread I fully intended to bake for you over the past 2 months." "I bet it would have been delicious." "It would have been the best." "So are you going to bake 2 months worth of it today?" "Uh, no." "It was worth a shot." "Good on you for having such high hopes." "My grandmother used to make a really good banana rum cake." "She did, did she?" "Yep, it was delicious."

ROTFL! I don't want to count how many cryogenic bananas are in my freezer...and I've got a chest freezer in my living room! (uh, well, no space in the kitchen, can't put it in the garage, so I cover it with a tablecloth at parties, and it becomes the bar) Don't ask me how much stock I've got in there, either, ok? Posted by: MisChef at May 2, 2005 02:30 PM They're great for smoothies like that too, and much less of a commitment than hours spent making bananna bread. I actually get a little panicky if I DON'T have banannas in my freezer, and a little crabby if boy eats them all before I can stash a few. Posted by: splatgirl at May 2, 2005 04:58 PM The secret is to never stick them in the freezer. You have to make it right away. Posted by: Sarah G. at May 2, 2005 05:25 PM See, brown and spotty bananas sit on my counter until they are about a minute shy of growing fruit flies. Then they become a baked good...and I do mean GOOD. When a banana is at that point but I am not inclined to make banana goodies, that's when they get sliced up and frozen for smoothies. Some orange juice, some banana, a few frozen berries, some flax seed oil and a tablespoon of wheat germ. tell the hubster I will make him some bread. Posted by: veg4me at May 2, 2005 06:38 PM I pulled all mine out to thaw and now they are smelling up the spare fridge in the garage. I just counted.....16....becoming compost bc they are so shriveled. Your blog makes my day, mostly bc I feel like it's not just me! Posted by: Meg at May 2, 2005 06:58 PM I whipped up a batch of delicious banana bread Sunday morning AFTER cooking the BF a fabulous breakfast....I'm definitely getting better in the kitchen. ;-) Posted by: TX Friend at May 3, 2005 06:05 AM Wow, must be something in the air... I too just did a frozen banana survey! And I just posted about my carbonated frozen bananas too. My freezer count is definately under a dozen ;) I've been meaning to make my Sweets Alton Brown's banana frozen yogurt someday. Another use for frozen bananas: as a kid I would buy chocolate coated frozen bananas at the wave pool, nibble off all the chocolate and then rub the frozen banana on my sunburned shoulders! Posted by: McAuliflower at May 3, 2005 08:25 AM I am that way about great bread, I always freeze it thinking I'll make stuffing or something, but when I pull it out ... it goes right into the trash, where it should have been to begin with. I have never thought to freeze bananas. But you can bet I will try it now. lol. Posted by: Dawn at May 3, 2005 12:17 PM Ha! I SO do the same thing! I think I have probably 6 or so in the freezer now. Wait, let me go confirm for you...OK, so I underestimated. I have 13 bananas frozen, waiting to be turned into steamy hot banana bread. :) Posted by: Victoria Winters at May 3, 2005 01:51 PM Or you could invite your husband to cook his grandmothers fabulous banana rum cake. It is his family recipe after all. Posted by: Mindy at May 3, 2005 09:53 PM I had the same conversation with my better half this week when before leaving for a business trip I shoved three bananas in the freezer (to join the 6 others already in residence). He shook his head and asked me "why bother". I replied, "because someday you ARE going to wakeup to those banana pancakes...just not this year". As always, excellent insight on your part.
