New York Lemon Drop?
November 12, 2005

I have a recipe plea.

I think we're all pretty clear on the fact that I suck the big rotten egg when it comes to actually posting recipes, but I am hoping someone will help a girl out. I do want to say, however, that I am in the process of writing up a few requested recipes. Look for them sometime in '07.
I kid.

Really.
Anyway.

A friendly reader e-mailed and asked if I knew of the recipe for the New York Lemon Drop. And I am stumped on this one. I know of my favorite lemon drop recipe, but have not heard of the New York version. Which I do imagine to be very edgy, funky, fun, fantastic, and perhaps have a huge pastrami sandwich floating on top. (I kid. I am fascinated with the city. And pastrami, actually.)

Anyway, if you know of such a recipe, will you drop a line or leave a comment, please?

Never heard of it either, but I googled it and found the following. Looks like it's the NY version because you can make it in a New York minute:

N.Y. Lemon Drop

2 oz. Absolute Citron
1 oz. Gran Marnier
Sour Mix
Club Soda

They lost me at the sour mix. Yecch -- sounds like Alka Seltzer Plus. Where's the real lemon juice? Where's the simple syrup? Where's the love?

I found this one for you... Looks like the difference is Triple Sec and a splash of sprite.. and lime?? Not sure about lime for a *lemon* drop. But, here ya go.

Mercer Kitchen's lemon drop martini
New York City

2-3 lemon wedges
1 teaspoon sugar
Splash of Fresh Lime Juice
Splash of Simple Syrup
3 oz. Skyy Citrus Vodka
1 oz. Triple Sec
Splash of Sprite

Put the lemon wedges and sugar in a mixing glass and muddle well. Add lime juice, simple syrup, vodka and triple sec. Pour into a shaker, add ice and shake vigorously. Strain mixture into a chilled, sugar-rimmed Martini glass. Top with sprite and garnish with a lemon wedge.

I thought my wife was the only one to use the phrase "grassyass"!

Typical New York Rip off of a good idea.
New York pizza= inedible variation of an italian classic
New York Cheesecake=how heavy can you make it and still call it cake?
New York Lemon drop = artificial everything for the tourists
Carnegie Deli=New York version of a good Jewish deli.

Bah.

Why yes, today WAS Maroon Saturday, why do you ask? Was it the drool marks or the white straps on my jacket that gave it away?

This is going to sound weird, but I always thought a NY Lemon Drop just meant that it was served in a shot glass vs. a martini glass...

I've never had a lemon drop that was a mixed drink at all. Here (here being Michigan) a lemon drop is a shot of vodka in a sugar rimmed shot glass served with a wedge of lemon. You bite the lemon right before taking the shot, or, if you're me, you squeeze it into the shot and drink it down that way. But I've never seen anyone else do that.
