Dancing With Myself
January 22, 2006

So for Christmas this year I gave a couple of family members the iPod Nano. What a fabulous feat of electronics those little gizmos are.

I can remember my first portable music player - a Sony Walkman. It was an AM/FM tuner that was roughly the size of a small briefcase, with headphones matching that of an F-16 pilot.

But oh my God did I love that thing. I was the envy of all my friends that Christmas because my parents were forward-thinking enough to get me such an electronic Godsend. Strutting down the hallways at school jamming out to music, complete with my leg warmers and ripped sweatshirt, made me feel like Miss Flashdance Jennifer Beals herself.

(Yes, I wore leg warmers)

I was very suprised to find my own Nano under the tree this year. It was a gift from The Husband, and he took great pains to load it with a wide array of my music favorites from classical, to pop, to easy listening, to Rock and on to the old school.

I'm not much of a music buyer these days, having given my checkbook over the purchase of ridiculously expensive condiments - and shoes,
but I do love a wide array of music. And I have found that a good rocking beat is the only way to get through the drudgery of time on my treadmill.

The Husband did a fabulous job of picking songs I love, including an entire set of 80's classics I've been playing repeatedly over the past week. It's amazing how a little Depeche Mode can make the pain of lunges much more tolerable.

Not pretty, mind you.

But tolerable.

So anyway, the other night I was all alone in our prep kitchen going over inventory lists and worksheets when Billy Idol's 'Dancing With Myself' came on the Nano. So I cranked up the volume and started singing along, and doing a dance move not really known to anyone but a small tribe deep in the jungles of the Amazon.

My head bobbed and weaved over prep lists of salads and braised meets, complete with a little jump over linen counts.

What I didn't know was that The Partner had entered the room and apparently tried to get my attention, but between the volume and my concentration on some pretty powerful dance moves, I didn't notice.

Which is unfortunate given my attempt to actualy get the Billy Idol snarl going on my face.

She finally flashed the lights to get my attention, and when I turned to see who was in the room with me, she was double over in fits of laughter.

I turned Billy off and tried to think of 1000 different explanations for my behavior. But I was busted, and I knew it.

So I simply took a bow.

Hee hee hee!

Good for you for taking a bow! I'm sure your dance moves deserved it.

Ummmmmmm, I don't know about the Billy Idol snarl thing though........

I know what the snarl is! And join you in the love of the dance. I have an IPOD and LOVE it! I take it everywhere I go and unpleasant tasks just zoom by. I also like to dance like nobody's watching, until somebody is watching and then well i just keep boogying! Life is short, dance while you can.

Ahem, FW, you should be proud of yourself!

I got those huge head phone rigs, but mine plugged in to one of those yellow & black 8-track players. Man it was cool looking, and heavy.
We didn't get along well because it was then I realized I don't enjoy things on or around my head. So, that was pretty much that. It was also at that point I realized that 8-track tapes sucked. Why? Because the tracks bled from track to track, this means you're listening to several songs at the same time, sorta.
So, you say these portable music boxes have gotten smaller?

I, too, received an ipod nano from the hubby this year. And, I too, have that Billy Idol song loaded up, as well as a HOST of other 80s classics such as Turning Japanese and the like. I've come close to being busted, but not yet.....thankfully.

I'm torn between my love of tunes, my desire to have some sort of soundtrack to the sensory deprivation tank that is the gym, and my inherent resistance to new, soon-to-be-obsolete technology. Call me old-fashioned but I don't want to be attaching any fancy technological gadget to my arm unless I can also communicate with the U.S.S. Enterprise by touching it. Extra points if Patrick Stewart beams me up ..... :-)

I am a kitchen-dancer. I also air-guitar. And I dance in the shower. And I am not ashamed!

I got the iPod Video version for Christmas. Last week, I asked my parents, co-workers, other family and friends to please take away my credit cards and debit card so I won't be tempted to visit iTunes and buy another episode of "Law and Order" or "Desperate Housewives" to download onto it. TV shows aside, I will say that the old school songs on my iPod are my favorites. I'm probably the only person that still listens to The Divynals.

ROFL - I'm wiping my eyes!!!

Great post.

Can I say "YAY!" for you on so many levels? You, for one, deserve your win on A.H.'s little popularity contest.

You know, I'd like to think we'd get along if we met. At the very least, we have similar tastes in music (huge B.Idol fan!) we could certainly share catering horror stories, and I could turn you on to the wonders of the Gingered Lemon Drop....

Sincerely, bravo for having so much fun and for not apologizing for it.

And for being gracious. Congrats.

Congratulations for your wins in two categories--I am really happy that you won for humor--because you always make me laugh, and laughter is a precious gift.

THIS is why you deserve so richly the Best Humour Award - congratulations! And thanks for the laugh...

I LOVE my iPod. Got it last year for Valentine's Day and have used it almost every day since.

My 12 year old son pesters for one, but then I have to trot out those "in my day..." stories about how I didn't have a walkman until I was 14, and it was the same size and heft as a brick and only played tapes, yada yada yada. At any rate, if he wants an iPod, he'll have to mow alot of yards or do alot of babysitting, just like I did, to get my Sony Walkman.

And FW, I also wore the leg warmers. :)

At least she didn't have clients with her...

Congrats on your win, your excellent blog, and of course, on bringing down the house with your Amazon jungle dance. Just a shame the house wasn't larger. ;)

Now I have to go download that one...

Very cute post. :)

What a great post, and it is funny! :-) I can imagine myself doing what you're doing even though I never had a legwarmer. I had imagined to be a Jennifer Beals in Dirty Dancing when I was growing up...Loves the 80's still...I don't know titles of songs but once I hear it, I know how to sing them (not all lyrics, but all well) along....:-D I'm new here in your blog..and I haven't read posts pass this one yet, but I think I'm going to stick around....CONGRATS truely for your two awards. Food lover that I am...cheers.

"Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to saddness, gaiety and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate and eternal form.
-Plato

Thanks for the visuals :) Here the amazing little machine is called, "my-pod." I had no idea that I needed one until my so generous daughter gave me one...thought you would appreciate Mr. Plato's words from his pre-pod world.

Heh! I feel your pain. I too thought I was alone once and had my family wondering if they should call 911 from outside (the house) as they were trying to get in and had forgotten a key. I was singing to add to my humiliation. To this day, no one hear's the song I was singing and does not burst out laughing.
