So, I've had this thing that I do - this thing that I have done since, well, since as long as I can remember.
The Husband hates pickles. Hates them. Hates the texture. Hates the smell. Hates all of it. When he told me that little tidbit we were still in the dating stage of our relationship, and I told him his dislike of pickles was a trait I would have to really consider before making peace with it. The toilet seat I could handle, but no pickles? Between you and me I am pretty sure he was dropped her by aliens. Later on in our relationship I was making dinner one evening and he happened to catch me taking a swig of the juice. And just to be clear - when I say swig - I mean swig. I open the jar, take a sip, and put it back in the fridge. I don't pour a glass of pickle juice over ice - although that thought has occurred to me - but I would bloat like and entry for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I do, however, like a splash in a bloody caesar.
So the look of fear on The Husband's face was mixed with joy, mixed with more fear, mixed with a little more fear for good measure. And as I started to explain he said, "It's ok. This is fabulous. No, it wasn't planned. But it's totally ok..." and before he could finish I put my hand on his arm and said, "No. I am not pregnant. I just like pickle juice", to which he replied with a face filled with a different kind of fear.
But as I have grown to accept the fact that he likes Cool Ranch Doritos, he has grown to accept that I am a pickle freak, and like to take the occasional swig of the juice.
Poor Husband. He spends the majority of his life explaining his wife's behavior to people confused by the mere sight of me. Posted by Foodwhore at June 14, 2006 09:50 PM
Just yesterday, I saw the suggestion of pickle juice popsicles ...and sent it to my daughter ...who is going to make them for my grandson. Pickle juice is the BEST! Posted by: Nana at June 16, 2006 09:19 AM My neighbors used to fight over who would get to drink the pickle juice when all the pickles were gone. Finally their mom created a chart to document whose turn it was! Posted by: Joni at June 16, 2006 09:31 AM Why are pickles so often associated with pregnancy? I didn't crave a pickle once when I was pregnant, only nachos and frozen fruit. It is horribly prejudicial to think that all women crave pickles when they are pregnant. Not exactly a crime, I know, but horribly annoying for us pickle lovers who don't choose to be labeled a baby factory when the urge for a briny cuke arrives. On a side note, I do enjoy a good pickle but have never once comtemplated drinking the juice. That's a bit over the top for me. A friend of mine was a 'smell craver' during her pregnancies. She had horrible urges to inhale gas fumes for one pregnancy and play-doh for the other. She's on baby #3 and I can't wait to hear what odd scent nags at her this time. Posted by: AuntJone at June 16, 2006 09:31 AM I also love pickles, and their juice. Thankfully, I come from a family of pickle-juice drinkers - my mother, her sisters, and my grandmother. Posted by: pru at June 16, 2006 09:36 AM What pickle juice I don't drink harbors hard-cooked eggs for later snackies. Learned that one from my Dad. Mmmm. Posted by: Torch-Light. at June 16, 2006 09:41 AM Lol...I too take the occasional swig and MyLuc cringes and moans and shudders, to him the exact description of your hubby is what he does. It's hard to understand but then again he does Mayo and I do Miracle Whip. Posted by: Melissa at June 16, 2006 10:10 AM I used to sneak drinks of pickle juice when I was a kid. Mom kept the jar after the pickles were gone, because she used the juice in her potato, macaroni and egg salad dressings, so I could usually sneak a swig easily from the jar. I am pregnant now, and what I crave is not pickles, but fermented, brined foods like saurkraut and kimchee. Posted by: Barbara at June 16, 2006 10:31 AM Did you know they make a pickle juice drink now? Posted by: Chris at June 16, 2006 11:24 AM nothing says hangover and cureforhangover like the pickle juice swigging. hail the pickle. hail it. Posted by: jamie at June 16, 2006 11:41 AM The spouse gets the pickle juice; I get the olive juice. mmmmmmmmmmm Posted by: shelley at June 16, 2006 11:50 AM My grandpa used to own a candy/sno cone store and he made me pickle juice sno cones everyday after school. To this day, I eat them in the summer because they bring back such good memories. And they taste amazing! Posted by: Ebony at June 16, 2006 11:55 AM I have never had pickle juice however, it might go well with some chilled vodka. I like to put cut cucumbers in pickle juice. Posted by: elle at June 16, 2006 01:07 PM Yes! I also take swigs of sauerkraut juice. Posted by: Madam Chow at June 16, 2006 02:35 PM You all are freaks! One of my mother's favorite summertime treats was an ice cold dill pickle. I can close my eyes and envision her sitting in the chaise lounge in the backyard drinking iced tea and nibbling on a dill pickle wrapped in a paper towel while I run through the sprinklers on a hot summer day. Not the same memories as the pickle juice sno cone but pleasurable nonetheless.
Posted by: HomefrontSix at June 16, 2006 04:35 PM Here's a shirt for your husband http://www.threadless.com/product/491/Pickles_are_just_cucumbers_soaked_in_evil Posted by: veg4me at June 16, 2006 06:12 PM Isn't pickle juice, um, vinegar? I'm so confused. Yes, I'm in the "You all are freaks! " column but I love this blog. Posted by: carly at June 16, 2006 08:13 PM Y'all probably don't remember the cartoon strip "Lil Abner", but it used to feature something called kickapoo joy juice. That's what I used to call pickle juice; as a child, I'd haul around a small Mason jar of the decanted ambrosia, thinking I was hot stuff. Posted by: Chloe at June 16, 2006 08:42 PM Wow, I thought I was the only one who was a closet pickle juice drinker--well--swigger. Is true EVERYONE that knows thinks I am freak, and yes it indeed does help a hangover. yummmmmy Posted by: Heather at June 16, 2006 08:50 PM It's probably full of some sort of mineral or vitamin. Other than sodium that is. Posted by: Colette at June 16, 2006 09:29 PM Hey FW! You were spotlighted by Google today... congratulations!! Posted by: Dr Alice at June 17, 2006 12:15 PM wifey uses the pickle juice plus mayo to make cole slaw..to taste.. it's awesome Posted by: eric swan at June 17, 2006 03:19 PM For a few moments I thought I found my wife's secret blog... you write like she talks Posted by: Dan at June 17, 2006 07:45 PM I read you all the time, but imagine my surprise when you were spotlighted on my google homepage: http://www.elise.com/recipes/archives/001963food_blog_spotlight_diary_of_the_food_whore.php Posted by: Nicole at June 17, 2006 08:51 PM i have ALWAYS loved pickle juice, straight up!!!! when i was a little kid, my grandma would to save the jar when they would finish the pickles so i could enjoy all the juice. i had a ritual where i would pour only a little at a time into the lid and sip it from there...until the entire jar was gone. the entire jar of juice. aaaaaaaahhhh, the memories. Posted by: iamchanelle at June 17, 2006 08:52 PM Ah! Outed. I did drink pickle juice with both kids. And both babies looooove pickles. I also like to put cauliflower florets into the pickle jar after the pickles are gone. YUM!! Congrats on the Google highlight. Well deserved. Posted by: Damomma at June 18, 2006 08:47 PM My husband refuses to kiss me if I have been near a pickle jar of any sort, so I know the look on your husband's face from my own home... As a kid, I used to take swigs of the vinaigrette my mum left in the fridge. YUM! Maybe there is a Madeleine in the making somewhere in that memory... Posted by: ASMO at June 19, 2006 10:49 AM I brew beer at home. One of my first beers had cucumbers and dill. Yum. Pickle beer. Posted by: crankycat at June 19, 2006 03:01 PM I like drinking vinagar. I dont' like dill pickels so much as I like those big fat dark green ones you get at Disneyland. YUMMY Posted by: mamas at June 19, 2006 04:15 PM They are just less evolved. Drinking pickle juice is likened to drinking fine wine. *snicker* My boyfriend cringes at the mere thought of a pickle and is utterly disgusted by my love of drinking pickle juice...straight from the jar. Posted by: Ashe at June 19, 2006 04:29 PM i've got the swigging vinaigrette thing bad. trough trial and error nixing ingredients, i've perfected my greek salad recipe: crumble a little feta in sraight up vinaigrette and dig in with a spoon! freakish. yes. delicious. supremely. greek 'salad' for dinner, methinks... Posted by: molly at June 19, 2006 04:38 PM Hey, I love pickles. I love pickle juice. In bloody marys, on it's own, whatever. My favorite sandwich (or snack!) is peanut butter and jelly... with pickle slices ON TOP. On bread, on crackers, whatever. It just tastes GOOD. Once when I was a kid, I puked while in the care of a babysitter from... drinking too much pickle juice. Posted by: jessica at June 19, 2006 04:38 PM I confess. I have taken the occasional swig from the pickle jar. Posted by: Valerie at June 20, 2006 05:31 AM there's a place at the end of our street called la paletera, and it is there where you can procure dill pickle sno-cones. when i was pregnant, i craved jalapenos. i would have put them on cereal and ice cream if i could. Posted by: melanie at June 20, 2006 06:15 AM That's a great story. I love pickles (but fortunately so does my husband!). However, the reality of pregnancy (since I'm pg right now) is that the idea of drinking pickle juice is really nauseating. So, that sterotype can be put to rest. Pickles and pregnancy do not actually mix. Oh, but don't think I'm judging you...I like pickles and ice cream NORMALLY. So drink away, my friend. Drink away. Posted by: Kady at June 20, 2006 11:36 PM I loved pickle juice as a kid, but really hadn't kicked any back in a long time (too long). This post made me remember my past love and -- just last night -- I took a swig from the jar. AHHH, pure joy! Thanks for reminding me of one of the simple pleasures . . . Posted by: Heather at June 21, 2006 09:47 AM My friend Brian is threatening to open a restaurant in Manhattan. Brian's Brine Bar, shots of pickle juice, olive oil paired with cheese and wine. You guys should partner up! Posted by: Cynthia Copeland at June 21, 2006 03:58 PM |
