Never Too Old
August 25, 2006

The Bride was a little on the snotty side. Ok a lot, actually. But we're used to that, and so apparently was everyone around her. It wasn't obtuse, just a fact everyone knew and dealt with.

Even with that fact, the Trick was wonderful. Everything went smooth. The guests were wonderful. The food, I must say, was exceptional. It was one of those nights we walk away remembering why we love this business.

The best part of the night came when the family was trying to locate the Great-Grandmother. She's a darling little woman of the young age of 92. She still wears gloves and proper hats, still insists on precise manners and social graces. She is the epitome of a lady.

She was located in a quite room in the back...reading a racy, bodice-ripping romance novel. She peaked over her book to say, "Yes, I am here hiding. The bride is a snot and I don't care to be around all those people. I will be out when I am done with this chapter."

Classic.

The Great-Grandmother actually said that? Outstanding!

ah, the privileges of age. The rest of us would be thought rude if we were reading a book in the back of the hall and refused to come out until we finished the chapter!

Just a question...
At your first meeting with a snotty bride, why not just say to her, "If you want us to cater your wedding, I suggest you lose the attitude or you can find yourself someone else"?
Brutal honesty can work wonders. I've confronted customers in my store about their attitude. When they are called on it, usually they apologize and smarten up, or I tell them I'm not interested in doing their work and tell them to leave. I don't need their money that badly.

Great-granny rocks! I want to be her when I grow up.

I wonder what side of the family she is on? It's hysterical if she's the great-granny of the bride.

ohh I only hope I can live long enough to be that honest!

That's why I loved my great-gran so dearly... She was brought up to be a lady but she had a streak of honesty and fire that just HAD to be admired! Being old ROCKS! I don't know why people are so determined to stay young.

my great-grandmother just died last week at the age of 95, and surrounded by family sitting in her favorite chair, next to a HUGE stack of bodice rippers.

I want to be her when I'm old and grey!

I am with Dave 100%! You are successful enough to have "the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason"! As a matter of fact, why not add that to your catering van in italics under the name? I think it would be great!
Oh, and kudos to Granny for telling it like it is!

Bahahahahaha! Priceless! We have a grandma who is 93 years old and she doesn't hesitate to make her opinion known - and you know what? We all think it is her right! and respect it (Our grandma reads "Soap Opera Digest" & "The National Enquirer" and believes every bit! giggle.

Thanks for the classic post!

she is one cool nan! my late grandma was a great laugh too. the things she said you could estimate from a guy's eyebrows... hmm, i had difficulty looking at guys in the face for a while. and the words that she spewed when we take too long in the bathroom... can put a seasond sailor to shame. to think she studied in a convent! i miss her. lots.

I grew up with about a dozen great-aunts...and the one we all remember and still speak of most fondly was the one who had a nasty comment about most anything -- told it as she saw it. Read bodice-rippers, shared her opinions, and brooked no nonsense (esp from snots).
She's been gone 30 years...and is still quoted whenever family members gather.
