Munchalicious
October 13, 2006

I was having lovely little chat with The Friend in Delaware this morning - about food, of course - when she mentioned getting a few snack items for her kids. As she ran down the list of items she listed Munchos.

I gasped a little.

And I said, "Munchos....What are those?"

Honestly, I had an idea but I dared not get my hopes up.

"You've never had Munchos?"

"Wait... Red bag?"

"Orange"

"OMG"

"...super salty... thin crispy things"

"Those were my favorite snack over 20 years ago - but we can't get them around here anymore."

"Would you like some shipped? "

At this point my breath accelerated to the point of near hyperventilation. And to understand you would have to have known me in my youth - Munchos ranked right up there with Chick-O-Sticks, Archie Comics and Lick-M-Aid.

And Bottle Caps.

And Shawn Cassidy.

But anyway...

I was a Muncho Freak.

They're just chips. But not just any chips. They are thin little wafers of salty goodness. And my friend Lana and I ate them by the bag full. To the point, in fact, our tongues would get so sore from all the salt. Everyone had them - I can still see my class sitting on the bus headed to The Seattle Center to see The King Tut Exhibit, and every kid in every seat was sitting with a bag of Munchos. They were THE snack to be seen with.

And then somewhere along they line - about 20 years ago - they disappeared from the store shelves. And it wasn't long ago that my friend Lana and I had a good laugh over Munchos. Which, well, the reason we laugh is because we were reminiscing about some of my many klutzy tendencies and once on the bus I slipped and fell on the wet floor and in doing so crushed the Munchos in my duffel bag. And it made me so mad I didn't speak for an entire day. (How I made it through my childhood without serious medication is beyond me. How I make it through my adulthood without serious medication is even more of a mystery... )

I just sort of assumed they no longer made them - until today, that is. And as I have searched I see you can buy the damn things on Amazon.

I think I now understand what Neil Armstrong felt like when he touched down on the moon. It's just that dang exciting for me, people.

Thank you The Friend in Delaware - I could kiss you.

OMG - the vending machine right out my office always has Munchos. B1, that's the number, and they are a mere 50 cents (although I see your bag is 25 cents - so apparently someone in Illinois is making a large profit) And, yes, Munchos are the snack of champions!

Munchos have been around forever. Hunter Cashdollar

I am odd in that I do not like potato chips [nor chocolate for that matter...I wait to be kicked out of the sisterhood for both! ;) - Honestly, tho' I could live off of a diet of MUNCHOS and iced tea.....and the soreness in your mouth - oh yah!...You list made me tear up in remembering - but I was an Andy Gibb gal moreso than Shawn -

Thanks for the memories - and if you ever need an emergency shipment - let me know as I will gladly send you some from VA - I know the want when you can't find it where you live [I still send my sis' KING syrup in AL b/c she can't get it...and hey, it HAS to be cheaper to send you munchos than a bottle of that heavyass syrup!]

Oh, and the other stuff you listed - you can buy that kind of stuff off the net too - there is a website - you would have to google it - but I used to buy QUISP cereal from it.

mmmmm Quisp - that is comfort food!

Thanks again!

The serious medication that got you through your childhood must have been Munchos.

Every time I've taken my tastebuds on a trip down memory lane I've been disappointed. Nothing tastes as good as my memory of it.

Take my advice, leave the Munchos where they are then you'll be able to remember them fondly, as they were.
Good luck.

Unfortunately, Angela may be right. Had that experience with cotton candy...
OTOH, if you can get your 8-track up and blaring Shawn, turn the lights down low, slip your retainer back into your mouth -- go for it!

I BELIEVE that I have seen Munchos in the Puget Sound area. Maybe at a 7-11 or AM/PM or one of those sorts of places. Now I'll really have to keep my eyes open.

Ohhh MunchO's! Maybe I should'nt mention bugles then uh?
But then you could maybe have them with these?

Apple Cider martini's

s'use the spelling i've had like uhhhhh, 4!

1 cup apple vodka
1cup triple sec
2cups apple cider
cinnamon sugar for rim

mix the spirts and cider in a pitcher. Wet the rim of a martini glass and rim a martini glass with cinnamon sugar.

Shake the cider mixture in a shaker with ice and pour into rimmed martini glass.

Makes 4 6oz martini's

This was a bit like a foreign language course for an African like me :o), but I can relate to things from my childhood that we no longer get.

Serious medication? Hell, I thought Lemon Drops were Serious Medication!

OMG! Munchos or Funyons (sp?) were my favorite right along with Shawn Cassidy, Lick-em-Aid and Bottle Caps!!!!!! I still have my Shawn Cassidy LP and pulled it out last weekend for my 16yo niece.

What a nice memory - thanks for sharing!!!!

Munchos AND Chick o Sticks are still here in the south. I remember going fishing with my dad when I was a kid and getting the giant Chick o Stick as a treat. I just bought a snack bag of them for the Halloween treat dish on my desk at work as a matter of fact. One of the ladies I work with had the exact reaction you did about the Munchos! And Munchos still taste as good as they did when I was a kid, as well as the Chick o Sticks. mmmm, junk food from our youth.

I was raised in the Southwest and have no idea what Munchos are-totally new to me. I can't think of something in our area that can no longer be found. Dr. Pepper was hard to find if you weren't in the South. I'll have to think on this.

Miri: those martinis sound great, but I think you have a hole in your pitcher. How does four cups of liquid only give you 4 six ounce drinks? Hmmm...I think someone's sampling. ;o)
We still have Munchos here in Canada. They are surprisingly good considering it's basically pureed potatos cut into rounds and deep-fried. And let's not forget the copious amount of salt! I'm amazed at the 25 cent price. Haven't seen that since the 70's. A small bag here is 79 or 89 cents.
This post made me think of something my friends and I would often eat. Garfield tortilla chips with dill pickle dip. Not sure if Garfields are around anymore. They were a very strong cheese taste and came in a bag that seemed to be nearly 3 feet long. Try it if you can find it.

OhmahdearLawrd, I guess occasionally some good comes from living in Alabama because I swear that every snack machine in this building (three that I can find) always has Munchos in it.

And, for the Atkins-friendly (remember, it's Alabama), there are also always at least two flavors of pork rinds.

Posted by: Heels at October 16, 2006 12:00 PM

Trust me the flavor of Munchos will not disapoint!

I'll have you know after reading this blog entry I spent the better part of an hour trying to track down a bag of Munchos last night. I live in Oregon, and apparently they are scarce here as well. I finally found some at a local convienience store. Not the big bag, but the smaller 99cent grab bag size. I headed home and proceeded to scarf a whole bag for my dinner. My husband thought I was insane, and just looked at me, you know, the way husbands do, and said "it's just a potato chip". I left him to his ignorance and figured, fine..more for me then! :)

Shawn Cassidy.

Sigh.

I must check out Munchos.
