No Answers - Just Brandy
November 28, 2006

No, I didn't take a header into a vat of mashed potatoes. And no, I haven't been carting around an entire turkey carcass proudly wearing a T-Shirt with the slogan, "I Can't Believe I Ate The Whole Thing", though I admit the t-shirt thing did cross my mind Thursday night as I lay my head down for the night. Instead of the nightly sip (ok, gulp) of peach brandy to keep this persistent little bastard of a cold from grasping it's spiney hands upon my body, I popped a couple of Tums with a water chaser.

Good Lord we had a lot of food. Obtuse amounts, actually. I am almost embarassed when I think back to the parade of gluttony put before me, when all I really wanted was The Grandmother's Jello.

Anyway.

No, no t-shirt, no vat o' spuds, I've been spending time with family and trying to escape The Great Snowstorm of '06. I've also been fielding numerous calls from a semi-hysterical bride wondering what all this ice and snow is going to do to her wedding on Friday. I wish I had the answer, but I don't.

But by God I've got the brandy...

Speaking of booze... anybody know how long a bottle of white wine can stay in the fridge once opened?

I broke down and bought some for a recipe and I'm not a big fan of wine... so I needed to know how fast I needed to cook some other things... or get to liking wine.

Thanks.

"More Brandy!!!" - Prince Hapnik, The Great Race

graydon - try to use it within the next couple days, it will keep longer for cooking than it will for drinking, but not much longer...

Graydon, did you pump the air out of the bottle or put inert gas into it when you put it in the fridge? I'm guessing not and that it is at least partially exposed to the air. In that case, I'd say 2 full days is pushing it.

Do you provide full service wedding services? The hall, entertainment, etc. or just the food?
Is she getting married in a tent?
Snow prevents the cooking and serving process from happening?
I might be just a little jaded as it takes a helluva a lot more than some snow to stop much around these parts (GB WI.)

Hey foodwhore......I have a cold remedy for you! My husband is from Germany...and the last time I had a massive cold, he made for me what he calls a "Grog" (probably the German name for a 'hot toddy'). You take a really big coffee mug, fill it half full of rum and fill the rest of the mug with hot water and lemon juice. Sweeten it with honey....drink it as fast as you can before it gets cold. I know this sounds like a lot of booze....AND you will definitely be feeling it....but I'm telling you ......man does it ever work!

Hoping the madness caused by a few inches of snow has subsided. My wife and I, visiting for Thanksgiving, barely made it out yesterday. It is insane how the slightest bit of inclimate weather really brings that city to a stand still. People can't even drive in the rain and it rains all the time.
By the way, maybe red is different or maybe I am just not as discerning, but I have cooked with wine well after two days and it is fine. I rarely cook with white because, like you Graydon, I just don't care for it.

Seattle is strange in that people here can't drive in rain or snow, but especially not snow. 2 inches and the city shuts down. Coming from the midwest, it's a truly bizarre spectacle. Schools shutting down, people taking off work, people stocking up at the store...

I can forgive poor snow driving skills because it doesn't snow much here, but not knowing how to drive in rain is inexcusable. I mean, you expect idiot drivers anywhere, but you'd think 8 months of practice per year would sharpen your skills a bit.

Just tell Miss Hysterical that the snow and ice will make everything that much prettier for her wedding ... The trick, of course, is say it like you mean it without breaking into mocking laughter :-) You really must post the recipe for Grandmother's Jello for us. I find myself strangely intrigued by the combination of lime Jello and shredded cheese--must be the Midwesterner in me coming out.

It is now 12/4/06. 6 days since the last post (unless there is something wrong with my computer!)

Where is the F.W.?

Shall I send out a St. Bernard (complete with more brandy or lemon drops perhaps?) to rescue her?

F.W. YOU ARE MISSED - PLEASE POST SOON!!!
