A Saturday off. And I could not be more thrilled.
I called The Partner. "We have Saturday off." And her response was a huge sigh of relief. "High Five", she said. "High Five right back", I said. (We're a little old school...)
But the pep in my step wasn't so much about food as it was about my latest TV discovery.
Before The Food Network became the powerhouse that it is (a station I have been sitting on the cusp of loathing...), and before my Saturdays became full of exciting things like stuffing mushroom caps and banging my head on cutting boards, I languished my afternoons in front of my local PBS station to watch fabulous people make fabulous food. And I guess due to lack of interest, or the insurgence of the aforementioned Big Network station, the shows I so loved seemed to disappear from view. But here, right in front of me, was my beloved Jacques making fast food, his way. When the show was over I ran to the computer to check out the website and scan the schedule. And there was Lidia Bastianich, Mary Ann Esposito, Martin Yang, Ming Tsai...and the list goes on. All the old favorites.

YES! Between the fabulous REAL cooks and "Gourmets' Diary of a Foodie", PBS has totally got my world right, too. Posted by: splatgirl at January 6, 2007 05:18 PM I'm so jealous,,,,,according to the website channel listing for my state there are only 3 cities in Texas that carry this program. How can that be? I feel cheated. I'm forced to continue watching RR be overly animated about Manchego cheese,,,,please. I'm thrilled that you had Saturday off, high 5. Posted by: sue.g at January 6, 2007 06:08 PM I may have just discovered my new favorite television station. Thank you! Posted by: swankette at January 6, 2007 07:55 PM I am soooo please to hear of your day off... If there's anyone that deserves it.... Hope you had a lemon drop or several! Posted by: TonyS. at January 7, 2007 07:27 AM I just wanted to let you know that, some weeks ago, I started reading your blog from the beginning. It took a while, needless to say. I really have enjoyed it. I don't know how you do it. I get crabby cooking for my husband. Posted by: Linda at January 8, 2007 12:22 AM Aaah yes! Old skool food TV - Julia, Jacques, and even (the ultimately creepy) Jeff Smith. Incidentally, Jacques Pepin is also the love of my life. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a booksigning in New Haven some years ago - he very patiently tolerated my gushing, stalkerish description of a dream I'd had about working with him, in which he praised my cheesecake-baking skills. A true gentleman, he didn't even call security. Posted by: auntie maim at January 8, 2007 06:07 AM I was devastated when I heard that Jeff Smith, whom I affectionately referred to as 'The Froog' like I had a personal relationship with him, was arrested for the offense which must not be named. ICK. Double ICK. Makes me wonder exactly what Craig's duties were off camera. Triple ICK. I think the whole celebrity chef bit is getting out of hand. I do watch FoodNetwork but I'm starting to enjoy the reality shows (Restaurant Makeover, Challenges, Ace of Cakes and the one about people starting a food business- the name escapes me) more than the cooking shows. RR is getting on my nerves and she's EVERYWHERE. Ugh! Posted by: AuntJone at January 8, 2007 06:40 AM Alas, at home I only get about 10 channels. I'll have to stalk createTV on the web. While visiting my folks I did get to see my fave - Ming Tsai - on Iron Chef America (good, but not as much fun as the original Japanese version) - anyway, Ming did amazing things with Duck (including blowing the skin up on one with an air compresser - very impressive!) and I was salivating at the end of the hour. Posted by: shera at January 8, 2007 11:26 AM What a great Saturday night off! Posted by: Susan at January 8, 2007 01:08 PM Hooray for Rachael- and Paula- and Sandra-free food television! Real cooking, woo hoo! Posted by: Tana at January 8, 2007 02:29 PM He's on at 2am here. Going to have to set the DVR! And I've loved Ming Tsai for a while - going to have to watch him again! Woohoo! Thanks for the heads' up! Posted by: HomefrontSix at January 8, 2007 04:19 PM I spend most of my weekend watching the cooking shows on PBS - Lidia, Jacques, Ming, America's Test Kitchen, Everyday Food....it's great. Posted by: The Home Cook at January 9, 2007 07:26 AM **eyes unfocused..can't see post** what is UP with that blinky ad to the left? Very disconcerting when trying to read your fine prose - could it possibly blink a bit less? I don't mean it to sound snarky...honest, but that is a tough one to take...hope you are making good $ from it.... Hugs Posted by: SkippyMom at January 9, 2007 08:02 AM i am so happy to see my beloved nick stellino on createtv! i missed him so! Posted by: barbie2be at January 10, 2007 10:39 AM Hey, don't hate on Paula Deen! :) I love watching Paula, Mario Batali, and Alton Brown. The only problem with the food network is they seem to think we all want more Rachel Ray and Bobby Flay, both of which I could do without. "Reality" shows are fun, too, but there are far too many "watch me travel to some city and eat things" shows. Those have irritated me ever since the first time I was subjected to 30 full seconds of Rachel Ray's delighted moaning on "$40 a day." Posted by: Lionstone at January 10, 2007 11:38 AM I don't totally hate the food network-I still like Giada and Alton-but at least I'm not the only one who is very sick of Rachel and OK, Emeril is starting to drive me nuts too. I'll have to check out this channel and see if we carry it. Yes, I still watch PBS alot for those shows-remember the galloping gourmet, how about when he went healthy? Posted by: Nancy Tackett at January 10, 2007 04:27 PM oh man . . . I was going to post about the Frugal Gourmet but I read AuntJone's comment and I had to go look it all up online. I missed all that and have been wondering why they don't run any of his repeats like they do so many others! I still watch the PBS cooking shows on weekends. Food Network can only be taken in doses and the Saturday shows usually aren't that special. I LOVE CREATE. There are so many interesting shows on there.
