« For The Locals | Main | This is Love » Not So Special
February 09, 2007
We had a little round table discussion at The Restaurant the other night about favorite sandwiches. I mentioned the Peanut Butter & Pickle I am so fond of - to which everyone turned up their noses - and many others were rattled off. Pastrami on rye, rare roast beef and horseradish, tomato and arugula - and then a few gave big props to the Reuben. The next day we served it as a special on the lunch menu (since everyone vetoed my peanut butter pickle... bastards). People loved it, and we sold a ton. And then one of the wait staff came into the kitchen and asked if we would be willing to make some changes to the special. A customer at Table 5 said they just "Loved Reubens!", but wanted to "tweak it a little..." They wanted it with turkey instead of corned beef, on sourdough instead of rye, skip the thousand island dressing, and add cheddar instead of Swiss.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that sandwich no longer a Reuben in any way? Wait, I guess there's still sauerkraut. Ok! Posted by: Charlotte at February 9, 2007 08:08 PM Hey! I think peanut butter and pickle sounds like a perfectly feasible combo. I'd try one. Posted by: weejie at February 9, 2007 09:31 PM That's why I think the following should be added to some menus... "We take pride in developing and delivering a meal that tantalizes the taste buds. But if you feel the need to mess up what we have to offer, we will more than gladly customize an order for you and promise not to spit in it before serving. However, you must understand that even the smallest changes can cause a disruption in our kitchen and we only ask a fair compensation for catering to your stupid-punk-ass. If you are concerned about the extra price just ask your wait-staff and they will gladly kick you in the groin and then inform you of the price differences. Of course, this is all based upon how much you want us to screw up the food, how nice you were in requesting substitutions and how well you take the groin kick. Thank you for your continued patronage... bastard." Posted by: Graydon at February 9, 2007 09:41 PM Oh.. sorry... just thought of another possible notice... "Since we take great pride in serving the best tasting food we regretfully limit the number of substitutions on any order to one... and that substitution had better be you being replaced by a respectful customer... dipsh1t" Posted by: Graydon at February 9, 2007 09:44 PM That is not a rueben. Sauerkraut does not a rueben make,,,,,does putting wings on a cat make it an Eagle? A rueben sandwich is the complete package, rye, corned beef, Swiss, thousand island and sauerkraut. Substitutions make it something else. Your customer ordered a turkey sandwich with sauerkraut, geez. I, too, love a PB & pickle with potato chips on the side. PS - I think Graydon may need an anger management course,,,,,it's food not foreign policy. Posted by: sue.g at February 10, 2007 05:57 AM mmmmn. Peanut Butter (anything creamy) & Pickle (Bubbies Bread & Butter). Ggggghhha... Posted by: stine at February 10, 2007 07:26 AM The first time I had a peanut butter and pickle sandwich was on a dare - i pretended to hate it so they would repeat the dare later on when everyone ran out of new dares... i went home and made a darling peanut butter and pickle sandwich, i haven't had one in a while though... maybe i should fix one up for lunch Posted by: Renee at February 10, 2007 08:41 AM Peanut butter and pickle is where it's at. My Dad started me on them when I was about 10 and it's still one of my favorites. The pickles must be dill, though. Anything else is too bland. I'm a big fan of dill spears on crunchy peanut butter, because that way you maximize the snap of the pickle. Mmmmmm. Posted by: MsMolly at February 10, 2007 09:04 AM Hmm... I've never had PB&P... I've had the infamous Elvis grilled PB& Banana. I've also had a Fluffanutter (Peanut butter and marshmallow cream) which is probably the tastiest sammy in the world. I've also had PB and honey (not my fav) and PB and cream cheese which is quite yummy. Reubens are wonderful and as I work in food service, I know substitutions suck. Gotta be honest though, I like cheddar instead of swiss on my reubens. I just like milder cheeses and I like cheddar and cornbeef together. One restaurant had what they called a california reuben which was similar to a regular reuben, but had turkey instead of corn beef. They were popular with people who didn't like cornbeef. I like Graydon's disclaimers though. Wish you could add something like that to menus. Posted by: Leslie at February 10, 2007 11:21 AM I think that's now called a turkey melt, is it not? Posted by: Elle at February 10, 2007 01:36 PM My mother always made us peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. Whenever I talk to anyone about them, I always get these looks! There is something about the salty, creamy, crunchy, cold textures that really works. I love 'em. I also like peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches. Crispy and creamy. Yum. Posted by: Elissa at February 10, 2007 02:16 PM I would have just smacked that person upside the head with a skillet and said "No. You may NOT tweak menu items." Then again, I need an anger management course too. As for the PB&P sandwich, I think I might just have to try one one of these days. I'm not a big pickle fan but I adore peanut butter. I'm always open to new experiences and willing to try anything once. Posted by: HomefrontSix at February 10, 2007 04:48 PM I think you would appreciate the movie "A Good Year". The protagonist is waiting on tables in a restaurant in Provence and throws out an American couple who insist on turning their French food into American. "McDonalds is in the next town, go." (Or words to that effect.) It's wonderful. Posted by: Greg at February 10, 2007 04:59 PM I love, love, LOVE pb & pickle. Must be dill. I think I'm going to go have one now. Man, I thought I was weird for that combination - thank goodness there are others that are just like me... sort of... :) Posted by: marnie at February 10, 2007 09:26 PM To me, an anger management class and a peanut butter and pickle sandwich are about the same... I HAVE NEVER HAD ONE AND NEVER WILL AND I DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE KEEP SAYING THAT "OH, THEY'LL BE GOOD FOR YOU AND YOU'LL REALLY LIKE IT..." IF THEY ARE SO DARN GOOD, YOU GO AND DO IT AND LEAVE ME OUT OF WHATEVER LITTLE FANTASY WORLD YOU LIVE IN... BEFORE ELISSA INTRODUCES YOUR SKULL TO THE SKILLET... FREAK. I feel better already. : ) Posted by: Graydon at February 10, 2007 09:26 PM Peanut butter & pickle is great...as is peanut butter and bacon on toasted bread! Also, I know this is weird, but we used to have peanut butter, raisin and mayonnaise sandwiches. Now that you are all sufficiently grossed out, I'll take it a step further. Mom would give them to us and call them "flies and earwax". Mmmm. Posted by: Carolie at February 11, 2007 09:51 AM hahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha that is too funny. Seriously though if you would have the whore's special on a secret menu (a la in-n-out burgers), i'd come order a peanut butter and pickle sandwich everyday! It was my favorite as a child and mmmm just thinking of it makes me smile. Posted by: chronicler at February 11, 2007 06:45 PM LOL! Posted by: sue.g at February 12, 2007 05:24 AM Has anyone tried PB & Bacon. Oh my God..... Its right up there. Posted by: Marianne at February 12, 2007 07:30 AM You will have to try PB & Bacon Yummmm. Posted by: Marianne at February 12, 2007 07:33 AM Peanut butter and pickle....mmmm....never tried it...but I think I will now! It sounds good! And as for Elissa's comment on peanut butter and lettuce sandwich...I have had it, and it is one of my favs too! I urge anyone to have it....it is a little bit like having peanut butter on a peice of celery..... Yummm! Posted by: Carmen at February 12, 2007 07:37 AM One restaurant I used to work in served a "California Ruben" Turkey with coleslaw and swiss on rye. It was one of the more popular menu items that we sold. Posted by: Julie at February 12, 2007 08:33 AM I was coerced into trying Bread and Butter Pickle, and Peanut Butter on a Triscuit..... Made me gag... really gag, it kicked the old gag reflex in. Just hated it. But Peanut Butter on a hamburger... with ketchup and mustard... THAT I like, go figure. Posted by: Oceanguy at February 12, 2007 09:33 AM it was NOT a triscuit. it WAS a Ritz. sheesh. They are delicious. Posted by: sydemp at February 12, 2007 09:35 AM Now, Now, Grayden - - I travel a lot, and have tried some truly funky food (think: fried bat) and I gotta say - you have to have an open mind about food, or you can miss out on some really tasty treats. (fried bat is not one of them....) Plus, trying something you end up not liking won't hurt you. Posted by: shera at February 12, 2007 09:43 AM Actually, I did make a PB and pickle sandwich once. I read an interview with mystery author Sue Grafton who mentioned that PB and SWEET pickle sandwiches were the favorite food of her detective protagonist, Kinsey Malone. The sandwich wasn't bad actually, but it didn't become a favorite with me. Posted by: RLR at February 12, 2007 10:41 AM I ate PBP's everyday for the entire year of 4th grade. Although that was a long time ago - it is still the best sandwich EVER. (Or it was the Yuck factor look on all of the other kids faces at the table :) Posted by: Jennifer at February 12, 2007 01:50 PM OMG! Are you serious? Peanut butter and pickle is MY FAVORITE sandwich. Everybody looks at me like I'm crazy, but it is so freaking good. I've never met anybody else before that likes it. I think you are my long lost twin! (it's extra good with cheetos) Posted by: jessica at February 12, 2007 02:03 PM I grew up with peanut butter and miracle whip sandwiches. It was just a "normal" sandwich my dad used to make (they grew up in the South), and I thought it was just another sandwich. Until I'd mentioned to my friends and they were totally grossed out. Posted by: OSeaGal at February 17, 2007 09:13 AM There is a malt shop in town that makes a bacon cheeseburger with pickles AND peanut butter on it...it is sooo good!
