June 13, 2007
Once and a while a few members of the staff will head out to grab a couple of drinks after their shift. I've never gone. Well, I've never been asked to go. It's sort of a "come one/come all" attitude and anyone who can make it goes. But this time I was asked - specifically - if I wanted to go. They all thought it would be fun to hang out with me in a relaxed environment. Not that The Restaurant isn't a constant barrel of laughs - because it is one comic sketch after another - but they wanted apron off - feet up on a chair - cocktail in hand. They should just come to my house on a nightly basis...
Now, there was a day when that would not seem daunting to me. I could meet friends at 11:00, be home at 2:30, and be on the job at 8:00 a.m. ready to take on the day, and possibly do it all over again that night. But now... well. Let's just say that the last time I purposely went somewhere at 11:00 p.m. it was to the grocery store to get an emergency supply of toilet paper. And I did that in my sweats and slippers so that coming home back to the couch would not be complicated. It was a conundrum, I tell you. Not wanting to offend them by backing out, coupled with a strong desire to be home before midnight was tearing me in two different directions. Thankfully, however, I was spared. A few of them realized they had early tests, so they needed to get home on time. And a rain check was taken. I dodged a bullet.

Welcome to my world. Posted by: kitchen hand at June 13, 2007 11:01 PM That makes two of us. I have gotten better at staying up later as I've gotten older for some reason but I'd rather be at home with a good book, my feet up, and a glass of wine in my hand. Posted by: Linda at June 14, 2007 03:33 AM I can't even stay up until 11 most nights; if I try, I fall asleep in the my chair. Sighhhhh. Posted by: Maggie at June 14, 2007 05:02 AM Don't worry, I'm 23 and I think 11PM sounds really late. I refer to this attitude as "sensible". Posted by: Emily at June 14, 2007 06:45 AM Ha, this gave me a full out belly laugh. While I have no issues staying up all night watching tv, or dicking around on the internet, the thought of doing what you had described sends me screaming into the night--well, more like my bedroom, with the door slamming smartly behind me. I spent the majority of my cheffing career partying like a rock star at night til 3am, then getting up to pound out assloads of food, while hungover like a bastard. I simply could not live through it were I to attempt even one night of it now. Posted by: Raging Lunatic at June 14, 2007 10:30 AM Yeah, know what you mean. Last time I had a late night function, I had to take a nap in the afternoon so I would be able to stay awake for it. Sad, but true. Posted by: RLR at June 14, 2007 10:31 AM Not older. Just smarter. At least that's how I like to think of it myself. Ahem. Posted by: Abby at June 14, 2007 10:42 AM Oh, come on. Suck it up and go out with them, once, in the name of better relations with your coworkers / subordinates / whatever. You'll survive. Posted by: StevenHB at June 14, 2007 12:00 PM Linda (poster #2) Could not have put it any better. Pass that bottle of wine my way! Posted by: TIna M at June 14, 2007 03:02 PM as a pastry student who is almost twice the age of my fellow students, I feel your pain. I really realized I was old when I joined myspace.
