Balls of Steel
August 10, 2007

"Do you think they will notice?"

"They are pretty busy, I doubt they will notice."

"Just look busy - pick up the menu once and a while."

This conversation was overheard spoken by an 8-Top. All business men, all loaded with notebooks and pens. All only wanted water. They were seated, menu'd, watered, given plenty of time when they told their server that they needed more of it.

And then when said server was taking the order of the next table over, she overheard the above conversation. She pretended not to hear it, placed the order of the table she just took, and went back to the Group of 8.

"So are you ready to order, yet?"

They all shifted in their seats. "Oh, boy. We haven't all decided yet."

"Oh no problem! Take your time. Just so you know, there's a $50 table fee if you just want to sit here and drink water."

She smiled and walked away from their table.

They gathered their items and walked out the front door.

Oh to live in a world where I can do as I please, wherever I please, business owners - and class - be damned.

I, too, wish I had balls of steel.

hello? it's called a conference room! look into it! a drop or 5 of visine in the water might make them sit up and take notice.

How excellent! I want to be her when I grow up!

I want to be her now! My boss would kill me if I said that to a table. My boss would want to be the one to say it. How can people think a waitress or business owner won't realize that they are taking up a table drinking only water, ESPECIALLY on a busy night. People don't realize a server only takes home tips so if you sit there all night without ordering, you are taking up her table. And losing them money. If they were to offer money up front, I'm sure the server would've been fine to let em sit all evening and not order (less tipshare to pay), but not if you don't intend to tip. People are assholes, even the nicest ones are guilty of it sometimes.

If only your waitress had retrieved a couple of their business cards before exposing their scam. They sound more like high-school pranksters then business people. What real business person has time for such silly shenanigans?

People are insane, I wish I had balls of steels like that.

kudos to the server who told them about the table fee. :D

As much as I hate to admit it, I think there was a disconnect in the 60's and 70's about manners. I was brought up rather strictly to respect all people and be polite but I have met many people around my age who have no clue on how to treat other people. This covers walking down a busy sidewalk 3 in a row to yelling at a cashier about how their credit card won't swipe properly. Unfortunately this covers friends as well. I worked in food service briefly but I think this lack of respect or egocentric ideal covers many more areas. Anyway, yay to the server and how she handled it. Professional yet to the point. Keep her! Btw, reason I left the industry is probably upon reading this I would have marched over and said "you've got to be kidding me, get the hell out... :)"

Look on the bright side. At least they didn't order and stiff her for the check.
