December 12, 2007
There are certain things I have to do every Holiday season. Eating roughly 450.25 pounds of sugar being one of them. And, you know, I think it goes without saying that a fair amount of liquor is consumed. And really, the only thing different about that is that I am in a good mood before I drink, not just after. That's how you know it's the holidays.
Then I make three batches of Hot Buttered Rum Batter to give to friends. But then I get busy and I enjoy the hot buttered rums so I only end up giving away one small container to the person lucky enough to have been in my presence the very day I make the batter. Any time after that I am too busy. And, you know, I drink it all.
That's how I sound when I sing. On a good day. I am also...kind of nice. Which I don't like to admit to often because, you know, I have to protect my street cred. But the other day in The Grocery Store I didn't even wish evil on the woman who elbowed me - yes, not an exaggeration - she elbowed me in a rush to get a jar of artichoke hearts. I simply stepped aside and said to her that she must need them more than I do, and that I am sure the bruised ribs would heal before my Trip To The Big City. I said I was nice, I didn't say I lost my sarcasm.
It's just - tradition.

It aint christmas at my house until wither the cats or the children knock over the christmas tree. I also enjoy the classics and enjoy seeing the coca cola polar bears on tv. Unfortunatly, my son is intent on watching "Mickey's once upon a chistmas" instead of frosty, but we';; try to squeeze both in. Posted by: Leslie at December 12, 2007 10:30 PM Egg nog. Gallons of egg nog, with brandy. Bread pudding and fruitcake cookies. But I must add Nightmare Before Christmas to the list of movie traditions. Posted by: Greg at December 12, 2007 10:34 PM hahaha! Posted by: frau mo at December 13, 2007 01:22 AM Baking. Gotta bake. Anything. These last few years, my strategy to not gain weight is, I bake stuff I don't like to eat. It kind of works. But that says it all: It's not about the eating. It's about the baking. My friends don't yet run in the other direction when they see me coming with a Gladware holiday container, but the day is coming. Want some cookies? Posted by: JulieT at December 13, 2007 05:42 AM It's not Christmas until the Mannheim Steamroller album that someone gave us has made its appearance on our CD player, and we've admitted to secretly really liking it. It's also not Christmas until I've bought and then lost (i.e. "put in a safe place") presents for most of the family, causing a mad dash on Christmas Eve to find replacements...and then it's really Christmas when I find the original presents while cleaning out the closets in the middle of August. Posted by: Emily at December 13, 2007 06:40 AM For me, Christmas doesn't really begin until I've watched White Christmas,,,,a couple of times. Ditto Mannheim Steamroller (except I have all of their cds and love them). Putting together the goodies for my girl's (22 & 24) stockings is the best part of Christmas for me and for them. Regular presents are great, but the stocking is where all the good stuff is! Posted by: sue.g at December 13, 2007 06:52 AM Christmas isn't Christmas without: My mom threatening never to make my dad's favorite cookies again because they're a pain. Consequently, my dad threatens anybody who is caught eating them, because they are his precious, precious gems that must be savored. Stuffed Christmas stockings - my aunt knitted mine out of yarn that has just expanded over the years. It's probably about a yard long, and my parents always dutifully filled it to the brim. Christmas movies - "Jingle all the Way" is a favorite. We always watch the marathon of "A Christmas Story" on TBS until we can't stand it any more. And not so much a Christmas as a New-Years-Christmas-Holdover tradition, but my parents and our neighbors and all the kids would get together and watch "Pee Wee's Christmas Special" on New Year's Eve. The children are horrified, the parents are amused. This year is my first Christmas away from my parents, though. Stupid real world and its lack of vacation days. Since it's just me and my husband, I guess we'll be developing our own Christmas traditions now : ) Posted by: Erin C. at December 13, 2007 08:28 AM Foodwhore you bring joy to my day. If you can fit in watching Bad Santa I shall have returned a little of the favour. Posted by: Bron at December 13, 2007 08:50 AM * Pumpkin pie. Made by Mom, savored by all. Thank you Foodwhore. Your blog's brought me much merryment this year. It's nice to know I'm not the only one out there with hidden thoughts of murder and destruction from my day job & life in general. Thinking such thoughts alone such thoughts are considered dysfunctional; when shared in a group - it's considered therapy. ;) Posted by: Rebecca at December 13, 2007 09:28 AM It's not Christmas without "It's a Wonderful Life" and "A Christmas Story" and my sweet potato biscuits with Mom's country ham followed by copious amounts of vodka and cranberry with a splash of Grand Marnier. 'tis the Season.. Happy Ho Ho FW, and a fantastic New Year! Posted by: Phyllis at December 13, 2007 11:25 AM I second Rebecca's Thank You Food Whore... I, too, have those thoughts on an hourly basis and sometimes it makes me feel bad. NOT!!! I have found much amusement out of your blog this year. I'm thankful that my friend stumbled upon you. We SO want to meet you! I swear that you are not real and that my friend Ty writes this blog.... He turns "Tricks" as well, so we know where you are coming from. Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays - whichever you prefer.. Posted by: Pam at December 13, 2007 12:54 PM Going to Grandma's house for a day of pizza and baking cookies. (and eating the dough!) My mother threatens bodily harm if I don't come home with at least two large containers of almond cresents. Also, I like to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Grinch (cartoon), Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol and Charlie Brown. Posted by: Amy Marie at December 13, 2007 02:17 PM It cracks me up that this must be your busiest time of year, yet you are posting faster than ever, you mad woman you! And the comments are coming faster too. It's not Christmas without A Christmas Story (tbs marathon supplemented with commercial-less vhs showings) and Ray Coniff and the Ray Coniff Singers record/cassette/cd. Because you're not truly a badass until your back up singers are named after you. And opening one gift on xmas eve. And, of course, begging the parents to let you open more. Posted by: Shelley at December 13, 2007 04:32 PM The Griswalds and the Baileys. Fried danish on Christmas morning and Old Tom's liquor, with Gayla Peevee in the background singing "I want a hippopotamus for Christmas". Good times. Posted by: Wonder Woman at December 14, 2007 10:16 AM Trans Siberian Orchestra and "A Christmas Story" 'cause I'm from Cleveland, baby. "Ralphie! I can't move my arms!"
