The Gasp...
September 28, 2008

So I was standing by The Bar when The Mother of The Groom came in the building. To date The Parents of The Groom had not met The Parents of The Bride.

I was standing talking to The Mother of The Bride when The Groom came over to introduce his mother. And his mother said:

"Oh, my. You are not at all as I had expected you to be. Your daughter is so tall and thin... I did not expect you to be so fat."

The Mother of the Bride gasped.

The Groom gasped.

I tried in vain to hide my gasp.

And so the night began...

It amazes me that some people were not equipped with that filter between their brain and their mouth.

Whatever happened to 'Charmed I'm sure' ... when you have nothing better to say?

Its the woman's daughter's wedding... there's a dozen or more utterly charming things to say... and 'Hey, you're fat!' isn't one of them!

Tact seems to be a dying art... Sigh!

Hope the Mother of the Bride likes Lemon Drops!

Well my mother is dead so it wasn't her, but she did make essentially that comment on meeting my MIL in 73.

Good. Lord.
I would say that this was one time when hiding your reaction didn't have to be one of your priorities!

Oh my goodness. You seriously have THE BEST stories!

... to which she should have replied, "Your son is so intelligent. I didn't expect you to be so stupid."

Alas, it never happens at the right time.

I'm sorry, I thought all my brothers were already married. I'm not sure why my mother was there....

You can't leave it at that--did the barbarian add any other special moments to the reception?
I hope she lives in a distant state (or continent).

OH. MY. GOD.

Just think of all the fun she's going to add to that marriage.

I hold out very little hope for this marriage. Genes and all. . . you know.

Lordy.

(Note to self. Meet the childrens inlaws first).

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at the next meeting of the in-laws. I'm sure it will be a riot. I hope there is copious amounts of alcohol available for the bride and groom.
