Yes, This Is Better
January 04, 2009

It was a quick interview. She had come in The Restaurant twice looking for work, and she happened to catch me on her third try. I had her application and was going to put her off but I had a few minutes so I invited her to sit down.

We chatted about the basics; her experience, etc. And the entire time we were speaking she twisted a lock of hair hanging by her collar bone. A nervous habit, I assumed.

I said to her, "There is no need to be nervous. This is very informal."

"Oh, I know. I am twisting my hair. I am sorry. I get nervous around people, and I do this. But this is a much better option than what got me fired from my last job as a server."

I was afraid to ask.

But I did.

"You were fired, why?"

"Well, I would get really nervous when I was serving people and I would chew my hair. So this twisting replaces that, I totally don't chew my hair anymore. I promise."

*sigh*

So, I don't suppose you hired her. No. . . that would have been a bad idea. I wonder what possessed her a)to do such a thing and b)to reveal it in a job interview. Weird.

You know, I actually feel for this girl.

But it's probably because my daughter has been diagnosed with trichotillamania recently and I have a whole new perspective on that. It's a sensory anxiety disorder that in it's mildest form is thumb/finger/hand sucking and twisting hair, to chewing and eating hair, and can go all the way up to cutting. Apparently it's genetic and can be modified by behavioral therapy.

Although, I do think that if being around people makes her nervous, then being a server is far from the best option!

As a server, I must point out that no one will make money waiting if they keep touching their hair or face. but you could hire her to hostess. less interaction to make them nervous.

Maybe she and Table 7 Ted should hook up.
