Camera Shy
February 19, 2009
Random thought of the day: Out of all the styles of French Fries - frites, if you will - my hands down favorite is an old school crinkle cut. Crunchy, and slightly oily, salted liberally and served with ketchup. Heinz, only. I cannot be bothered with Hunt's.
Num.
I need your help. I am camera shopping - for real, this time. I've looked before, but when I did I started to freak out at all the buttons and I got sweaty and ended up leaving the store in a fit of stress.
I need something a bit more advanced than a basic point and shoot. But something less advanced than someone who takes pictures for a living would use.
I also need something that would survive the occasional drop or nudge off the table. Because, it's me here...

Nikon D60... I got mine at Costco last summer for $957- ... came with 2 lenses, carrying case, software, etc... Killer deal and there is a ? button so that when you turn the button it tells you what your setting. LOVE IT!!! Good Luck

I don't know too much about cameras, but I ran across a site the other day that has some great tutorials on using them - thepioneerwoman.com, then click on the photography section. Great for when you finally get yours.

I just went through this and ended up with a Canon Powershot SX10 IS. Consumer reports loves it - says it's the best point-and-shoot on the market.
Posted by: edith at February 19, 2009 09:47 AM
I got a Canon PowerShot SX10IS for Christmas, and I freaking LOVE it. I'd previously had the Canons on either side... the tiny point-and-shoot and the big fancy digital SLR. This one's right in between - enough heft that I can hold on to it, image stabilization, capability to attach my external flash, but not nearly as complicated or big as the SLR. (And yeah, you can just use the SLR in automatic point-and-shoot mode, but I always felt like I was wasting its potential doing that.)

If you're looking to do food shots (close-ups), it's hard to beat a DSLR (I have a slightly vintage D70s, and it rocks!). What you want to have with this is a "fast" lens. When looking at lenses, they'll have a cryptic number on it like "f/3.5". The lower this number, the better off you'll be for closeups or portraits. You can break the bank on this, so research is your best friend! Find a REAL camera shop and spend some time there...if they're worth their salt, they'll take their time so that YOU are comfortable with what you're getting.
Good luck!

I treated myself to a Nikon D80 and love it. I do need to learn all the buttons and functions (there is a dvd to go with it) and experiment but so far the point and shoot with autofocus works great.
Posted by: Susan at February 19, 2009 11:26 AM
And I got a really good package deal on it (online)...case, lenses, tripod, filters, extra battery, extra memory card, etc. for $1100 total.

If you're going to drop it, get a middling-nice Point-and-Shoot.
A non-pro DSLR will be no more sturdy, and cost a lot more to replace or repair.
(I just got a Canon A590IS as a portable complement to my DSLR; it was $99 at Amazon, and it's fine for non-pro use.
The only areas where you'd have problems with such a camera are deep macro/closeup work and low-light conditions... and you're looking at expensive (and more fragile, what with that mirror to knock out of alignment, and bigger shutter mechanisms) DSLRs to fix either of those weaknesses.
I've had excellent results with the P+S Canons, and I'll point to Ken Rockwell as a professional who sings their praises for a non-pro camera.*)
More specific advice (or even different advice) would require knowing what your needs are, and what sort of "advanced" is required.
* Full disclosure - I have no connections to Canon at all, though I'd love if they'd pay me to talk nice about their stuff. My DSLR isn't even a Canon - it's a Pentax.

I feel the same way as you about camera shopping. Finally a friend recommended I go into a smallish camera shop (Wolf in my case) and tell them what I want and say "help!" - the experience was awesome. I love my camera, and I have experts to go to with questions, etc. Good luck!

Canon Powershot here too - I've got the S3 flavor. They are great compromise between too few capabilities and so many features that you'll never find them all.

I got a Canon Powershot A590 recently and I really like it. it's small, it has various modes from full auto to full manual, and includes a VERY easy mode in which you can hand the camera to anyone. ch-check it out.

I don't know a darn thing about cameras so good luck with that, BUT I love the last two sentences. That is why I always come back. You can crack me up with two sentences.
I love that!
Really, good luck with the camera.

Oh how I identify with lots of buttons and sweat! I really, really wanted a Nikon DSLR. For like a year. But when it came down to finally researching something to buy, I freaked over all the extra stuff that you'd eventually have to get. Lenses, filters, hoods, etc. I mean, it's all cool, but I couldn't see myself lugging all that stuff around when I wasn on vacation or something. So I started looking at ultra zoom or hybrid point and shoots. More affordable, and more middle of the line. I found the Canon SX10 IS. It just came out last fall and has wonderful reviews! It's a point and shoot with 20x optical zoom, but it also has almost all the same settings a DSLR would have. And, it also has a movie mode, which I was surprised to learn most affordable DSLRs didn't. This was important to us. I got mine last month and love it! Definitely look it up!

husband and i are pro photogs, but we also have a need for smaller point n shoot type cameras that have versatility. i would recommend a canon powershot g9 (referb) or g10 (new). this camera is durable (we have two toddlers, stuff gets bumped and whacked a LOT) and easy to use, it has an automatic setting and can be completely manual. if you know your basic photography 101 stuff you can figure it out. lots of other bells and whistles that you can use or ignore and in my opinion not too many buttons :)
good luck, love reading about your stories, they crack me up! we shoot weddings here and there, so we know the event world pretty well!

Not a fan of crinkle cut fries but agree with you on the Heinz. Only one that will do, in my humble opinion.

One word of caution on the Nikon DSLRs. I have a Nikon D70 and it is a fairly fragile camera. My husband left it sitting on the sofa and my 15 month old pulled it off the sofa and it dropped 18 inches onto the carpeted floor. That small drop onto a padded surface still broke the camera. I got it fixed and still love it love it, but since you mentioned durability as an important feature, I might recommend one of the better point-and-shoots for you.

I have a Canon PowerShot SX10IS. It's one step below a digital SLR, but I'm nervous about working with an SLR. It's got 20X optical zoom, image stabilization and 10.0 megapixels. This camera retails for under $300 and produces great shots, even with me behind it. I cannot testify about its dropability, however. But it does come with an attractive yet practical strap so you can hang the camera around your neck.

Nikon D60. It's a great transition from point and shoot, to a DSLR.
I got it from my boyfriend last christmas. And it's great. It fits perfectly in the hand and very easy to use.

I have a little waterproof optio and it puts up with all kinds of crap from me and takes fantastic pictures. Since its waterproof I can take it out in the rain, take pictures of food with stuff on my hands then wipe it off, its just great. Probably in the cheaper price range.

I just bought a camera this week after what felt like months of researching. I ended up with a Sony Cyber-shot H10 (179.99 at Costco). Although it's a point-and-shoot you can switch it to manual mode and adjust things the way you would like them. It's got a fantastic zoom (which is why I chose it - as a mom, my kid is always "out there" doing things that I want a picture of). A friend of mine has this camera and after seeing everything it can do, and the quality of the pictures, I was sold. Also, you can currently get the 4Gb memory stick for this camera at Office Depot for $15 - a steal.

I bought a Panasonic Lumix FZ28 last May to replace my 35mm point and shoot. And do recommend it.
I'm an architect - but one who really can't take a decent photo to save her life(a talent inherited from my mom)and have a similar talent for .... uhmmm ... dropping things and tripping.
This camera was recommended to be by a friend's dad who is a photographer for Natl Geographic - specifically with my lack of photographic skills in mind. It is basically a point and shoot - but it has a Leica lens - amazing zoom abilities (perfect for getting details two stories away) - and fairly simply setting so that I can successfully photograph a wide range of conditions (buildings in sunlight, night shots, my niece's soccer games, cocktail parties). It also does take small videos - but I haven't really explored this feature yet.
The directions are simple to understand and I can set it up and manage most of it after one scan thru the directions. There are some things I need to go back and reference ... which means I can't lose the directions EVER. (something I am worried about).
The quality of the photos is amazing. Two months ago, I gave a slide-show to the office of photos from a trip - and several people commented on the quality of the photos. That NEVER happens to me so I can only assume the camera can take full credit.
I have a very padded carrying case to protect it from falls for obvious reasons. Now, to be honest, I have lightly dropped it once or twice and maybe a little bit of a martini somehow managed to fall on it ... but nothing big like tripping down the stairs or a full soaking. I'm not certain how that would go and don't really want to find out - thus the carrying case. Can't recommend it enough for people like us.

I treated myself to a Nikon DS80 for Christmas last year and I love it! Well worth the money and I don't fret over all the buttons...I learn one function, get good at it (however long that might take) and move on to another function...easy peasy!

The comments run the gambit of middle to high priced cameras and ones that are a bit fragile. Personally I have fun with digital cameras for kids. Amazon has them in bright colors, won't crack when dropped and using them makes me laugh. Good luck on your camera hunt.

I love my canon A700 - it has a great auto function (as in it automatically does everything) plus a ton of auto scenes (as in, you pick snow and it adjusts everything, you pick night snapshot and it adjusts everything); it also has all the manual functions if you ever decide to do anything like that -- I'm a bit of a clutz and it has survived bouncing around 3 continents with no problems....and best of all, it takes AA batteries -- no expensive, has to be charged battery.
Posted by: jen at February 20, 2009 08:36 PM
Do you cook yours twice? In duck fat? Mmmmmm........duck fat!
Anyway, you have to ask yourself several questions about the camera you need. When I am looking for something new, I always ask myself, "What don't I want, or what don't I like". This makes the decision a bit less disctracted and usually more focused. Then ask yourself what you actually want it to do.
Digital devices today often try to cram too many cool, ancillary components into the package at the expense of the primary goal of the tool. Think about the current crop of mobile telephony devices. Is it a camera, a multi-media device, a web browser, or a telephone -- why....it is all of the above and a chamois to boot. And, none of the components work as needed. So...on to the camera.
How will you be using it? Is it going to be used for your Tricks, for developing a digital storyboard for marketing your Tricks, a way to track the progress of a new dish from dream to plate, a cool piece of tech to impress the likes of Paris, or will it be used to post images to the work here? The questions can often be more complicated than originally thought to be.
Then there are other questions. Based upon how you are going to use the camera, you will usually eliminate quite a few of the cameras that you thought you needed. But we will get back to that.
A big debate between photogs is grounded in the pros and cons between different camera manufacturers. To simplify, it usually comes down to Nikon versus Canon. Does that mean that the other camera manufacturers cannot provide you with what you want? Well.....yes they can. However, there are some issues (depending on what you intend to use the camera for), that push the discussion mainly upon those two schools of thought.
Both Nikon, and Canon, produce fantastic cameras, lenses, and accessories. Personally, I lean towards Nikon. Why? Because I made my first major investment in this realm with Nikon and I have a bunch of lenses and acoutrement that will work with any new iteration of Nikon camera body that will be coming out for any time soon. However, I have used Canon camera equipment for certain projects and I find it to be equal to Nikon in every respect.
The choice between the two comes down to small details and personal "feel". How does it "feel" to you. Kind of like how one shirt has a better "hand" than another shirt made be an equally magnificant designer. Or how I prefer French carbon steel knives to German stainless steel knives. They all work fine, but I like how they "feel" when I am working with those particular tools.
What are the differences in the details? Some argue over the amount of pixels, the complexity of the menu system, the high/low end of the ISO speeds, the weight of the camera/lens setup, when shutter death occurs, the speed of the frames per second, the buffer size, the type of memory cards used, and a myraid of other issues.
When it comes to the average, beginning, or casual end user, the quality of the picture taken by any decent camera (all things being as equal as possible), will be similar. Yes, you can, and will, find that some of the higher-end camera/lens assemblies produce a superior image compared to entry-level, or prosumer models. But the questions here should be: "Superior to what, or better than what?"
Think of it this way. You could buy a very decent home theater system for under $2500.00. The quality of the image, and the clarity of the sound would be quite nice indeed. You could also buy a very, very high end audiophile home theater system for well over $100,000.00 Would you be able to tell a vast difference in quality between the two? I cannot and neither can most people unless they have a certain gift with vision and their aural capacity. The same is usually true with cameras. How many people will actually "see" such a difference when shown images from different types/levels of camera equipment? Not many.
So, you don't need to spend a fortune to find a piece of kit that will allow you to use that particular tool to capture and manipulate images as you see fit. You will spend some money, but you can spend it carefully and come away with a tool that provides you with spectacular images.
Back to the questions revolving around how you will use your camera. If it is for casual snaps, posting images to your post, for documenting dish development and evolution, and for the yearly lampshade-on-the-head New Year debacle, then a higher-end point and shoot camera will probably suffice.
However you will be giving up some flexibility of use due to certain limitations on the tech in the camera. If you are going to be taking shots for cookbooks, high-end marketing, or the paparazzi photos you will be taking of your competition to blackmail them into sharing their secret recipe for Chef's Chocolate Salty Balls, then you probably need to up the ante and buy an entry level, or prosumer DSLR model.
The reason for this would be that DSLRs will allow you greater flexibility in manipulating subjects digitally. If you are going to use the camera as most of us do, then a camera body with an 18-135mm lens should do the trick. If, however, you are going to be taking a lot of close up images, then you will need a macro lens (called Micro lenses by Nikon). If you are doing that, then you will most likely need some type of tripod to ensure a sharp image. If you are going to take the process a step further, then you will find that a bunch of other kit will be needed (special lighting, bounces, and filters).
So, again it comes full circle to the question of what you are going to use the camera to do for you?
If you have the luxury of borrowing different types of cameras from friends, then you should snag a couple of them and then try them out on different scenarios and see what you like and dislike about each one. But you really need to play around with them. Take a diverse array of images and THEN download them to your computer and try to make adjustments as needed. How easy is it to do this? Are you pleased with the final result? You may find that almost any camera accomplishes the tasks you set before yourself, only to find that the computer software is the weak link in the entire work process. This, of course, is an entirely different set of issues. Nonetheless, it is something to consider unless you plan on farming it all out to WalMart, a local camera shop, or in certain instances, out to very high-end labs which produce art images.
A lot to consider here? Yup. But it will make you happier in the long run if you take the time to play around with these systems a bit before you make a purchase. Also, consider that there are plenty of photog blogs out there that facilitate this decision-making process. Ken Rockwell's comes to mind, but there are others. And, there are several series of books that will provide assistance and direction. There is even a set of books that will show you how to properly use your camera to the fullest and how to get the most out of what you have. Think of Jacques Pepin's Technique and Methode books, or La Varenne Practique. Same, same.
I could ramble on here for a while about this, but I am fairly certain everybody would revolt. If you want greater flexibility in manipulating images and concepts, then I would look at a decent DSLR from either Nikon or Canon. Find a lense that allows you to manipulate the images as you find appropriate. Buy good memory storage devices (memory cards from SanDisk or Lexar). Buy a couple. You don't want to buy one big one and leave it in the camera and have it go down with all you images on it. Get in the habit of having a couple of cards of smaller size so that you will download them frequently (you will be less likely to lose that "one", important shot due to card failure if you have a system).
If you dont' need as many whistles and bells, then look into a more serious point-and-shoot model towards the upper end of the quality spectrum from Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Leica, Samsung, and several others. I have a certain model of Pentax that we use for really harsh conditions that has yet to be affected by high drops, immersion in silty/muddy water, extreme altitudes, talcum-like sand, and wide swings in temperature ranges. It works fine, but it does not provide me with the level of flexibility, nor the amount of quality, that my better DSLR's do.
Sorry..............long-winded posts drive me nuts too. But, I am guessing that you only want to buy something once and then have it work as YOU need it to work.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me via ecomm at my ecomm address and I can forward something a bit more comprehensive.
Best of luck in your new camera.
Oh..........what type of spud do you prefer for your frites?

I use my camera for taking photos of my daughters at horse shows. Lots of action shots. What I would highly recommend (and I'm not getting into the technical stuff that your other posts got into because lots of buttons and stuff make me sweat too) get a digital camera with an eye viewer in addition to the regular view screen. I didn't and REALLY wish I did. Especially if you are thinking of taking photos of you culinary creations!! Good luck!!

Luaghing over the fact that the comments might make you more confused than you were BEFORE you asked for a suggestion!
I would recommend a Canon... you need to see which one fits your price range and has the options you want. But, Canon is a favorite for ease of use, price and quality pics.

I lust after the Nikon D300. But I have a couple of "needs". I need the ability to export RAW image files, and the ability to attach a remote shutter button, because I take photos of food and products. It has WAY too many buttons, but I need to graduate up and that's where I've determined I should go. The Nikon D200 is a fabulous buy and may suit you well. Go to Nikon.com, and you can do a comparison of models and features. Good luck!

If it's durability you're worried about, Canon has just announced the D10. It's waterproof to 33 feet, shock proof up to a 4-foot drop, and freeze resistant.
Other than that, I'd say the Canon SX10 IS. It's about as versatile a camera as you'll find without going to a DSLR. It's reasonably tough, too.

A bit late posting, but...
If you are obsessed with image quality you will hate it, if you are rough on your gear you will love it. Olympus Stylus, choose your model based on just how tough you want it... there are two lines. The best are freeze proof, crush proof to 250lb, drop proof to 2m, waterproof to 5m(!) dust, bacteria and butter-proof too. I got one after seeing my buddy come in from an epic, muddy back-country dirtbiking trip and wash his off in the sprinkler before going inside to download. He'd had it three years at that point, and had been to South America, Europe and Mexico (twice), and it showed... but only on the finish. I've had mine for one year, and it really IS tough. It also excels at documenting, the macro and supermacro modes are very good, and it has a built in LED for a non-flash self lit supermacro in low or no light... you can take a picture of a bee at night from 5" and get the hairs on it's legs. That said, a point 'n shoot with no motors and a heavily folded optic path make it a poor choice if you're trying for an accurate image.
Cheers, and thanks for the commentary... helps me remember why I love food and hate cooking for a living!
